RELIABILITY

The moving annual average for punctuality and speed for longer distances far outstrips that of road when coupled with a strong dooring solution that is managed by a single lead provider. On time arrival for rail freight compares well with other distribution modes and is improving:

COST-EFFECTIVENESS.

This is possible through the underlying economics: trains burn less fuel per tonne mile then road vehicles and a train, which can have as many as 40 or more beds/wagons, only needs one driver.  Consequently, longer journeys tend to be more viable by rail, and shorter journeys are preferred by road. Where the point of cost neutrality comes is governed by many factors which are route and commodity specific.

ENVIRONMENTAL.

Benefits of rail freight distribution compared to road have received much publicity and increased use of rail is one of the means which large companies subject to carbon footprint reporting are seeking to reduce their carbon emissions. On average, rail freight emits just 33% of the CO2 of an equivalent journey by road and eases the notoriously bad traffic congestion on Indonesia roads.
